8 children left with wire
October 10th 2008 09:35
200 children need to be checked after a piece of wire was found inside 8 patients.
The wire comes from a PIC line which is inserted to deliver drugs, chemotherapy being one of these uses.
After the discovery at Townsville Hospital, Queensland Health began notifying parents of possibly affected children. Parents are being warned not to panic as there is no evidence of any ill effects.
Hmm, I don't know about you but I'd certainly worry if some wire was stuck inside me or if I had one, in my child. Those children will need to undergo surgery of some sort to remove this wire. Like the reason they were in the hospital the first time wasn't traumatic enough, let's add some easily preventable surgery!
I hope Queensland Health looks further into this. This type of mistake surely costs the medical industry unnecessary expense, not to mention the faith of patients in hospitals being diminished.
