Airport Security
September 30th 2008 00:03
One really has to wonder how a major airport managed something like this.
Staff at the Qantas domestic terminal in Brisbane realised that some passengers had entered without being security screened properly. The result of this was the entire terminal including passengers travelling on other carriers, needing to be evacuated and rescreened.
It's bad enough that Qantas has had quite a few mishaps which perhaps point to less than stellar maintenance standards, and now they manage to allow in passengers without screening them? For one thing with security at airports the way it is, it is hard to imagine passengers getting anywhere near their terminal without first going through security. What did they do, leave the security checking point unattended for a few minutes?
Regardless of how it was managed, the issue caused major delays in the airport and it took 2 more hours to rescreen all the passengers. Including passengers who had already boarded planes on the tarmac. Imagine the on-board announcement...
This breach follows another small scale security lapse in the Qantas terminal just last week.
A Brisbane Airport Corporation representative stated that the "BAC is certainly working with Qantas to make sure these issues are addressed."
It sounds like they are planning on putting Qantas on detention. They better make sure issues such as this are addressed. Flight mishaps and airport security breaches combined do not bode well for Qantas as an airline and they need to really get their act together quickly if they do not want to lose the trust of the public.
