Bar-Time Philosophy
November 22nd 2006 01:46
Have you ever sat at a bar for hours, sipping drinks mind you not guzzling them, and sharing philosophical conversation?
I never have. I am borne of the American system which prohibits legal consumption of alcohol until the age of 21. This means I am innately fascinated with the idea of bars, and pubs, clubs, and lounges. This means, as well, that just on the eve of my 23rd birthday did I ever engage in leisurly drinking (IN A PUB) revolving more around conversation than alcohol.
Some might consdier it poncy or pretensious, irrelevant, self-indulgent or all around ridiculous. I used to think so too. But its fascinating the edge people get with a tiny bit of alcohol. The thought process (if just the right imbibment is undertaken) is not only still perfectly clear, but marvelouslly uninhibited. Just enough incoherence to care, just enough congenial familiarity with your fellow philosopher-conversationalist to offer slightly more information, slightly deeper levels of thought.
If you get the mix just right, the conversation might open up possibilities you couldn't have known existed before. Though the nature of forementioned bar-time philosophy cannot be revealed it was both mundane and astounding. On some level arguing the banal and at the same moment arguing the profound.
Now you have to be careful how you use it, who you engage, and how often you go out of your way to partake in it, but, with just the right amount of sporadicness, sponteneity, friends, alcohol, and timing you've got yourself one hell of a trendy night.
(now in saying that i realize that half the trend is the foresight to know the appropriate situation to utilize bar-time philosophy, which also makes me wonder if i am not a little bit attracted to perception of social situation as much as perception of philosophical theory...)
