Being single is a curse?

RSVP'ing for a Christmas party, I failed to satisfy the definition of "and partner" on the invitation because I wasn't planning on bringing a boyfriend or a husband. Apparently, that's all that is allowed. Now if I had one, I'd certainly bring him but since I'm single I don't see how I'm expected to bring a boyfriend unless I suddenly meet him or he miraculously shows up on my doorstep in two days. *goes outside to look*
The silly woman I was talking to on the phone told me I wouldn't be allowed to bring a family member (I was going to bring my Mum) and was only allowed a boyfriend or husband. Being single is hard enough at times, I don't need to be made to feel worse about it by complete strangers! I came off that phone call feeling nothing short of embarassed and belittled. And all for what...just because at this point in time I happen to be single? Shocking! I definitely don't need that, no one does. They won't be seeing me there, I certainly have better things to do with my time.

I had a similar situation with the work chrissy party, they said partners and children welcome.
