Oil-Change and Car Repairs
November 12th 2006 06:00
Do you know how much cash i just dropped because I am auto-maintenance incompetant? Too much! And, to top it off, this was just the tip of the iceberg because undoubtedly there is something wrong with my car that must be dealt with in further detail and at further cost...
I'm serious when i say i would not only be a FAR trendier person with a few basic auto-mechanic skills but a FAR wealthier one, as well.
I know how to change a tire, that was a fun day when I learned, but thank god for that, its come in handy more than once. I even know how to check my oil (ah, yes, a creepy man in Christchurch, NZ taught me how to do that) but beyond that i am USELESS. Seriously, useless. I don't know where wind-screen fluid goes, I don't know where engine fluid goes (is there even engine fluid, is that oil or are they different?) You see how hopeless this is?
So the man tells me I have a cracked fan belt and my brake pads are wearing thin and I have absolutley no idea what any of that means. Not in terms of parts, nor labour, nor anything else. And I have a feeling I will be paying the price, dearly, for failing to have that knowledge.
Oh to be trendy, to have a pair of overalls that get dug out every 6,000KM for a DIY oil-change. I don't know what's trendier, to have the skills, or the outfit.....
