OZ: Men's Television Obssession
December 12th 2006 06:19
I am fully behind the times but the question still plagues me and begs asking: what is the deal with the obession with OZ (the tv show now the country, the country i get...)
My roommate (my male roommate) is slightly fanatical about music, and about keeping our bathroom on just-this-side of liveable, but not the TV. He'll pretty much plop down and watch anything (including some of the girly things that me and my other roommate (my female roommate) are apt to put on. But come 10pm on Monday nights, WATCH OUT.
The television is reserved for him then, without question. The way it is for me on tuesday nights when the O.C. is on or the way we all agree it is on Sunday nights for So You Think You Can Dance.
But i can hear it drifting from the living room into my room and they're talking about lethal injections and about prisoners. The entire show, as far as i can tell, is built around a prison and it follows both the prisoners themselves and the people who work in the prison and their experiences with them.
Its been called very realistic. But I just can't understand why someone would want to watch a "realistic" show about being in prison. Don't even get me started on the lawyering shows and the courtroom dramas...
I can explain to you why i watch the O.C. In fact, I can explain why MANY people watch the O.C. or shows like it. Its fantasy. Its drama. Its entertainment. Its ALMOST, ALMOST just like the life you live (or wish you lived) there is an element of relating that is fundamental. No matter that i was raised in a completely different area, style, socio-economic bracket than all the characters there are still dilemnas and problems that arise that are very much like things i understand. By the way, these characters are like 1/2 my age (or supposed to be) and through them i can still remember the best parts of teenage angst.
but why would you want to relate to being a prisoner? how could you relate to it? What about it draws positive memories or associations? Is that not at all why boys watch this show? Could it be i've misunderstood completely?
What draws y'all in? What makes OZ, must-see-TV?

you're probably right about the fantasy thing, it just seems an odd setting for a fantasy to me....but, i am sure there are those who feel that orange county, CA is a weird setting for a fantasy too...
