Rollin' With the Homies

I used to think it was trendy to be one of those girls who could hang out and hold her own with the boys. That was, of course, before I was one of those girls.
Now don't get me wrong, hanging with the boys is no easy task and it requires a certain skill, but sadly, after my weekend away with the boys, i've decided though its good to know how to do it, you're better off if you don't. Because the problem with "hanging with the boys" is that all too soon you become "one of the boys."
Now it doesn't matter that I look nothing like a man, that i have no masculine features or tendencies, I scream when I see bugs, I hate rough-housing, I coo over babies and animals, wear mini-skirts and heels...no, none of those things seem to help my men differientiate me from "the boys."
And i used to think that was a compliment. I used to think it was uber-cool that the boys could, at once, see me as one of them, and certainly NOT one of them. And its a precarious balance to keep those simultaneous understandings, as I now know. The precipice on which that knowledge rests is being shaken, dangerously, by more factors then I accounted for and all of a sudden I went from ex-girlfriend to "mate."
Now I can admit when other women are beautiful, and am happy to do so. I can even indulge these wonderful men in my life a moment or two of conversation, but 24 hours of boob-talk and beers, i think i've officially been co-opted to the "one of them side" and let me tell you, that is neither the place I want to be in, nor very trendy at all!!!!!!
All of a sudden the gentle-touches and the moments of sweetness that defined and differentiated the relationship my boys had with me from the ones they have with one another were replaced, reduced, and vanishing.
I love my boys, always will do, but trendy is managing to keep those delicate balances in your favour, leaning hard to the feminine, making sure that instead of taking for granted how cool you are they remember, every time they interact with you, how damn good you are to them! THAT is trendy, anything else leaves me feeling cold.
