Rudeness!

September 15th 2008 11:25
I was disappointed today by the level of common courtesy displayed by not one, but four young men sitting close to me on the bus today. An elderly woman got on the very full bus and there were no available seats. Who immediately jumped up to give her their seat? I did. Not one of the 4 healthy-looking men sitting in the same area even moved to give her their seat.

Giving up a seat for an older person has been ingrained in me from a young age and I expect others to display the same courtesy. It can't be such a foreign concept to them surely!

It's not a matter of being old-fashioned but it's a common courtesy. Sadly, this is not an uncommon occurrence but it says a lot about the world we live in today. However, maybe if they watch others do it over and over again, they may eventually learn to do the same.

It's a case of leading by example in the effort to keep common courtesy alive.

Nice to have you posting again Justicia, it's been awhile!

I was raised the same way. If someone less able than I (pregnant women, older folks, disabled people) need help, I've always been first in line to do so. It's not that hard to give up your seat or open a door or help them carry something to their car. It's simple courtesy.

These days, I'm the senior citizen, and seldom find any young person with that sort of manners. It's always such a delight when someone does behave well, though. A new neighbor of mine, Francisco, is a great one for doing things for others. He's the exception. He takes care of his wife and kids and still finds time to help his older neighbors when they need something done. His parents obviously did their job!

thats strange, usually half the bus jumps up wildly gesturing for any recently boarded elderly passengers to take their seat - the majority of the time the older person refuses everyone out of pride, stating they would prefer to stand and dont have far to go etc (in my experience)
