Sentencing again
November 16th 2007 03:27
The father who killed his three children by driving them into a dam has been given three life sentences. An appropriate sentence considering the three young lives that were ended but we all know that the sentence will be appealed and whether that sentence will be upheld or reduced remains to be seen. The ability to appeal a decision made is vital to our justice system but it also appears to sometimes produce results that hinder rather than benefit the justice system. The example being the story referenced to in my previous post - an appeal that provided a slap on the wrist rather than an appropriate sentence.
An Australia wide study into sentencing would be beneficial to the current system, in order to try to determine the best and fairest method for sentencing to serve and uphold justice.
The father in this case deserves the three life sentences in my opinion, the sentence being appropriate to the crime committed. What happens though once the decision is appealed is anyone's guess, it'll be something to keep an eye on in the coming months.
