Standing for Darfur

Back in the day, when E.R. made him the most famous doctor in the known universe I had no inclination toward George Clooney. Women love him, men love hanging out with him, and I probably would have told you that the Clooney obsession was very untrendy. But here's why I was wrong:
Trendy is standing up for what you believe in. Trendy is putting yourself in a position to be criticised and berated for taking a stand, and standing up for it anyway. George Clooney, for all his imbecile qualities is courageous, ambitious, driven, motivated, and impassioned when it comes to Darfur, and it looks damn good on him!
We are what we stand up for, no? We are what we believe in, what we'll fight for, what we refuse to be complicit in, what we'll never tolerate, no matter the personal cost.
Well, Clooney spent time in Darfur, more than any of the ambassadors to the UN can say. He spent time and money-- his own resources there. He went to the UN and he pleaded the case of the displaced, the refugees, those living off of aid, and those dying inspite of it.
Bodly Clooney declared: 'In many ways it’s unfair, but it is nevertheless true, that this genocide will be on your watch. How you deal with it will be your legacy –our Rwanda, your Cambodia, your Auschwitz. We were brought up to believe that UN was formed to ensure that the Holocaust could never happen again. We believe in you so strongly. We need you so badly. We’ve come so far. We are one “yes” away from ending this. And if not the U.N., then who?"
We have come to believe in the UN despite the numerous times it has failed us. We can't just believe, shouldn't just put our faith in an institution that has proven to have short-comings all its own. We should actively participate in taking a stand. I no longer believe it to be un-trendy to have a healthy reverence for Mr. Clooney. Afterall, he's doing the sexiest thing of his life: putting that money, that fame, that face, that exposure towards a cause worth fighting for!
