The customer service industry
November 9th 2007 02:30
There are days when one really has to consider why they work in the customer service industry. I ponder it and I ponder it and only have one conclusion...for me personally, it's a need. It's flexible while I study, I can take time off whenever I want for exams and the pay is good for a student needing some extra cash.
Putting up with customers who are rude, ignorant and downright abusive is unfortunately a part of the job. What can I do? Nothing, not if I want to keep my job. Anyone who has worked in this industry should know exactly what I'm talking about.
We are all customers, we all go into shops, ring our telephone company, credit card company etc. I expect good customer service too, but I don't expect anyone to put up with me if I am rude and inconsiderate. Maybe it's because I've worked in the industry but I don't understand the customers who make you seriously consider why you do your job. Of course there are the customers who appreciate your hard work, and thank you for it and those are the customers that make it worthwhile.
Those who think they can be rude and inconsiderate to someone who is simply doing their job, has absolutely no say in anything their company does, works in a department that has nothing to do with your complaint and still spends half an hour listening to you complaints about the company should be glad to be receiving a service. You have a sounding board for your complaints and I will take your complaint to my manager gladly as long as you treat me with the same respect you yourself expect.
It's can't actually be that hard to be civil but I've met customers who simply have no idea what civility means. And I have now come to the end of my rant...
